Concerted efforts at improving natural systems can include habitat restoration, invasive species removal, erosion control, pollution capture, among other methods. Improvement projects can take place anywhere; the improvement of natural systems is not mutually exclusive to spaces typically thought of as "natural" or "ecological". On the contrary, opportunities to improve natural systems are abundant – regardless of conservation status.
Hoyer Heights
The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) identified a high risk of street flooding in Minneapolis' Hoyer Heights neighborhood should a two-year storm event transpire. The MWMO also noted the lack of treatment infrastructure for stormwater runoff. In 2020, the MWMO partnered with the city to install tree trenches in the neighborhood, a form of green infrastructure.
